G.G. Garden Update- Bye bye Big Z

In the last few weeks, the garden has been a little bit unruly. With all the rain, and a milder season, it's already time to pop in my autumn and winter plants. I have been dreading re-arranging things but today, I finally managed to spend the entire day getting things into shape. Being a primary producer/vegetable merchant isn't all tea and scones and tennis matches you know!!

G.G. Cooks Matt Wilkinson's Spinach, mustard greens and baked ricotta

Flipping through the latest issue of Gourmet Trav, I stumbled across an excerpt from Matt Wilkinson's new book- Mr Wilkinson's Favourite Vegetables. Seeing I'm basically a vegetable merchant (well only to my own family and a few neighbours but practically...) I decided this was indeed, most suitable for this evenings meal. Whilst I don't grow mustard greens, I do have a number of other substitutable options and as we all know, there's nothing better than whipping something up with ingredients that have come from the garden minutes earlier. Literally minutes. It took me 33 seconds to walk out there - 3 minutes to cut my greens, have a look around, scout for snails and 33 seconds to walk back in. Yeh yeh. Take that for convenience, you corporate giant duopolist supermarket suckers!

Addimi Espresso Cafe Tamworth

There are plenty of good things about living in The Sticks. I can have my garden, there are very friendly (sometimes nosey, but generally well meaning) chaps everywhere, and I'm able to have a few cows (one to milk and one to dry age). Unfortunately a plethora of good and exciting dining options sadly isn't on the list.

In fact, in the whole of the North West Slopes and Plains, there are only a mini sized handful of places that I would visit on a regular basis and enjoy the meal every time. Being here has definitely been more about the food I can grow and cook, and less about the food I can go out to enjoy. Not that I mind this of course, but it's also nice to have the option to visit somewhere fab for lunch if you feel like a nice long lunch or just a little treat.

G.G Garden update - Where do snails come from? And other ramblings

Where do snails come from? Seriously? How do they just appear when it rains? Are they, with their little mobile homes, prepared for battle at any stage hiding in the undergrowth waiting for the rain to come to make their attack?

Is there some kind of snail transport that they can pop onto and then suddenly they are dispatched across gardens off the back of the snail express? I can imagine thousands of snails packed into a little carriage, and then when it rains, they drive around like mad crazy little speed demons, rushing around corners so fast they almost look like cartoon character cars, and then a snail administrator wearing a tiny little red cap dumps a hundred or so snails off all at the same spot - all to invade the gardens of the world.

G.G. cooks Luke Nguyen's Banh Mi and Warm Beef and Watercress Salad

Have you been watching Luke Nguyen's Vietnam Season 2? I have. Loving it sick to be quite honest. Vietnam fascinates me and although I've never been, I feel like I love the place already.

Perhaps I should hop on a plane and just live in Vietnam for a while? Seems like the sort of place you would be able to do that and end up truly in love. The markets with fresh food are amazing, and the street food always looks like something worth dying (or at least running across several lanes of Viet traffic and defying death) for.

Valentines Day joke that is not a joke

What is red and fiery and burns brightest on Valentines Day? There are two answers to this one:
For most people it would be something mushy and a bit lame like
A) their loved ones heart or eternal flame or similar st lamentines day sentiment;
For G.G. The answer is
B) my laptop setting fire to itself and literally burning (as in fire, not as in copying) every image, photo, file and piece of data that I have saved.not even kidding. I don't do things by halves...Not funny. So beyond not funny, its not funny. All my files on that computer are from the last 4 years or so and predictably, I haven't backed them up.

I was going to bring to you a new month of scheduled posts starting in March with a new focus for G.G. but with this latest development, it might be a bit slower than I had hoped. Please be patient with me!!

Thanks for the emails and kind comments about my absence- I will be back and I hope you'll still read. I'm also trying to fix a problem or so with the google reader, for some reason it's not loading my posts through... Anyone know a good blogger guy?

Rest in pieces you stupid laptop.
