G.G. Interview: Apprentice Pastry Chef Gemma Liston

Gem is an inspiration to all frustrated food lovers out there. After working in a ‘boring and horrible’ office job for a number of years, she was at the end of her tether so took some leave and decided to find a job she enjoyed doing – ideally involving baking. Although she went through a lot of trouble finding something that suited her, eventually (through dedication and some help from a handy twitter network), she found the perfect position and is now happily employed as an apprentice pastry chef in Brisbane.

G.G. Garden Update: A day of rain and Jamie Oliver's Caponata recipe

Unlike the rest of the Eastern side of Australia, here in The Sticks it is as dry as the back of beyond. Oh wait?! We basically are in the back of beyond.

Via my twitter feed I've seen flooded streets, people whinging about the rain never stopping, and others showing off and gumbooting up. Not here- no siree! The gumboots have only had one official outing, the lawns are dying, my patches need a good couple of inches and all the dams could do with a top up.

G.G. De Lurk dear readers

I have to admit, I'm one of those people who sit at the bar or at a restaurant and sometimes gets distracted from the conversation with my P.I.E (partner in eating- I don't talk to my food in public!) because I'm too busy eaves dropping on other people's convos. Talent or bad habit? I'll go with talent. After years of practicing, my ears are able to pick up most of the finer details.

G.G. Garden update: G.G. the very strong girl

It is fair to say that I if I was a toon, I may just be Popeye or Madeleine (the whole inside-I'm big thing...). Today I would definitely identify with Popeye. Not because of how much I love Spinach, although I really do, but because of how super strong I am. Yesterday, I shovelled and carted and then unshovelled half a tonne of compost and manure. Not even exaggerating or kidding. Literally half a tonne. How did I get from being in the midst of the Manure shortage of 2012 to standing on a large pile of poo? Well, Dad doesn't do things by halves, unless of course, you are talking about half a tonne.

G.G. Glammed up: My very own hat and plants that change colour!

I don't think the potion I suggested in the last blog post is a very good idea. Hold off using until further notice please. I sprayed liberally onto the brassicas only to go out and find that they have changed colour. Basically magic that went wrong. Not even kidding. They are now a dark waxy green - they used to be lightish - more similar to the spring onions, and now they are rating more closely to spinach on the colour scale. Oh dear.

G.G. Garden update: Weather systems and visiting frogs

Not many people have an inbuilt weather system. I'm not going to elaborate too much because you will think I'm very odd (and I suppose I am in many ways...), however, due to a little quirk, sometimes I can tell that the rain is coming even when the weather man thinks it isn't. I'm mostly right. Let's just say I can feel it in my bones. (Directions, on the other hand, are a whole other story...)

G.G. Garden update:The tediousness of ploughing a whole field by yourself

Yesterday was tedium on a stick. Which means it is amplified. I don't know why we started adding 'on a stick' to sayings, but it works quite well for a certain marsupial friend and myself, so I'm going to keep using it.

After feeling very annoyed with the garden last week   I basically needed a miracle to get me motivated to finish off the second patch, so I could get it ready for planting, which needs to happen soon, because Mother Nature waits for no-one.

Thanks and Goodbye

There are times in life when life gets in the way. That is why, sadly, I am announcing that I am retiring from gardening and blogging. Thankyou to all my readers - it's hard to believe anyone would want to read my ramblings, but for that, I thank you.

Thankyou to all my P.I.E.s - without you, I would have eaten alone, and surely not have had so many great stories to tell.
